공중 정원

오라버니가 운전해 다니던 대형 트럭은
공중 정원을 짓는 데 사용한 커다란 도구였다
그가 다닌 길은 낭떠러지처럼 험한 길이었다
황사바람 불어 늘 희망이 잠겼다가 떠오르곤 하는
신기루의 사막이었다
그는 집요한 전진으로 모든 억센 장애물들을
부드럽게 건너갔으며
늦가을 서리에 공수부대 훈련 때 낙상했을 때도
하얀 눈빛 같은 미소로 아슬아슬 삶의 고비를 건너왔다
한가윗날 부쳐주던 부침개처럼 둥글고 따스한 웃음이
얼굴에 맴돌았다
자신은 쇠약해 가면서도 끈질긴 힘으로
허공에 덩그러니 희망을 달아놓고자
안간힘 썼다
삶의 부단한 속도를 급브레이크로 멈춘 후
그는 자신이 공중 정원이 되었다
불가능한 희망 덩어리를 공중에 매달아,
부서져 가는 이들의
단단한 꿈으로 흔들릴 것이었다
그의 환상의 트럭이 어디든지 뻗어가
삶의 붉은 열매를 맺혀 놓을 것이었다

A Garden in the Air
The dump truck my brother used to drive
Was a huge tool to build a garden in the air
The road he used to use
Was dangerous as a cliff;
A mirage in the desert;
A hope that rose and sank in yellow sand storms
He smoothly crossed all the tough obstacles
By stubborn persistence
When he crashed in air combat training
Because of a late fall frost
He overcame this threat
With a smile like light on white snow
The smile on his round face
Was as warm as the pancakes
We used to make on days of the full moon
Even as he weakened
He worked doggedly
To hang highest hopes in the air
When his life of speed suddenly braked to a stop
He became a garden in the air
Hanging a mass of impossible hopes in the sky,
He gave those with shattered dreams something to grasp
The garden bore red fruit
From the dreams that his truck carried everywhere
