Knocking Down Walls
I returned to my hometown and knocked down old fences
I tore down the leaning walls and ripped out the squeaking gate door
It became a house without walls
My eyes were relieved
First, the half acre vegetable garden came into the yard
And the hundred-year-old Zelkova tree by the vegetable garden came in, trunk and all
The Zelkova brought with it a dozen square feet of shade and three magpie nests
The sound of leaves wooing came like the sound of my dried earwax atop my mother’s knee
One afternoon, a musk deer
Other evenings, wild boars cut across the yard, all in a row
In the winter, rabbits will come down to forage and leave behind excrement like soybeans
The orchard on the hill, covered with peak season flowers, and the pond also came in
And I felt full at the thought of possessing the lotus flowers, the clouds, the sun, and stars contained in the pond
The streams of the golden river with a dozen poplar trees standing in line
The countless acres of rice paddies those streams govern left and right
The highway going to Oesan-Myeon Myurangsa Temple cutting across the field
And hundreds of cars crawling on the highway each day, all came in too
Weol and Cheongtae Mountain with green hues flowing down on all sides, all came into my possession
When I stand on the raised floor, I can make out the shape of Oseo summit shooting up out of the Boryeong earth
I plan to drink some rice wine with the Lord of Boryeong and argue over ownership
If he doesn’t want to give up Oseo, I might even threaten him and tell him to give up his daughter
And if he doesn’t comply, I’ll build a fence in the sky
And stop the clouds, the sun and stars, and Milky Way flowing toward Boryeong
After knocking down the leaning walls of a rural mud home worth just nine million won
I became the lord of the province
담장을 허물다
고향에 돌아와 오래된 담장을 허물었다
기울어진 담을 무너뜨리고 삐걱거리는 대문을 떼어냈다
담장 없는 집이 되었다
눈이 시원해졌다
우선 텃밭 육백 평이 정원으로 들어오고
텃밭 아래 사는 백 살 된 느티나무가 아래 둥치째 들어왔다
느티나무가 그늘 수십 평과 까치집 세 채를 가지고 들어왔다
나뭇가지에 매달린 벌레와 새 소리가 들어오고
잎사귀들이 사귀는 소리가 어머니 무릎 위에서 듣던 마른 귀지소리를 내며 들어왔다
하루 낮에는 노루가
이틀 저녁엔 연이어 멧돼지가 마당을 가로질러갔다
겨울에는 토끼가 먹이를 구하러 내려와 방콩 같은 똥을 싸고 갈 것이다
풍년초꽃이 하얗게 덮인 언덕의 과수원과 연못도 들어왔는데
연못에 담긴 연꽃과 구름과 해와 별들이 내 소유라는 생각에 뿌듯하였다
미루나무 수십 그루가 줄지어 서 있는 금강으로 흘러가는 냇물과
냇물이 좌우로 거느린 논 수십만 마지기와
들판을 가로지르는 외산면 무량사로 가는 국도와
국도를 기어다니는 하루 수백 대의 자동차가 들어왔다
사방 푸른빛이 흘러내리는 월산과 청태산까지 내 소유가 되었다
마루에 올라서면 보령 땅에서 솟아오른 오서산 봉우리가 가물가물 보이는데
나중에 보령의 영주와 막걸리 마시며 소유권을 다투어볼 참이다
오서산을 내놓기 싫으면 딸이라도 내놓으라고 협박할 생각이다
그것도 안 들어주면 하늘에 울타리를 쳐서
보령 쪽으로 흘러가는 구름과 해와 달과 별과 은하수를 멈추게 할 것이다
공시가격 구백만원짜리 기울어가는 시골 흙집 담장을 허물고 나서
나는 큰 고을 영주가 되었다
