The Reason That Books Are Heavy
Books are heavy because they are made from trees, a writer said.
I learned this studying for a test,
but I didn’t ponder it.
I underlined, “Books are heavy because they are made from trees.”
After that, every time I read a book
I remembered trees.
Because I thought only of trees,
I don’t know if I can forget
the sadness buried in the wills of workers who committed suicide,
the years prisoners stacked letters.
Sometimes I’m afraid,
but I can’t cease to remember the tree.
Instead, I made a branch of a tree my standard.
I weighed myself,
I planned a daily schedule,
I searched for promising jobs.
The more I did, the more silent the weight of tree was.
It showed how hard the passing of each day filled with work would be.
The reason books are heavy
is because of that tree
rooted, standing silently, without tears

책이 무거운 이유
어느 시인은 책이 무거운 이유가
나무로 만들었기 때문이라고 했다
나는 책이 나무로 만들어진다는 사실을 시험을 위해 알았을 뿐
고민해보지 않았기 때문에
그 말에 밑줄을 그었다
나는 그 뒤 책을 읽을 때마다
나무를 떠올리는 버릇이 생겼다
나무만을 너무 생각하느라
자살한 노동자의 유서에 스며 있는 슬픔이나
비전향자의 편지에 쌓인 세월을 잊을지 모른다고
때로는 겁났지만
나무를 뽑아낼 수는 없었다
그리하여 나는 한 그루의 나무를 기준으로 삼아
몸무게를 달고
생활계획표를 짜고
유망 직종을 찾아보았다
그럴수록 나무는 말 한마디 하지 않고
하루하루를 채우는 일이 얼마나 힘든가를 보여주었다
내게 지금 책이 무거운 이유는
눈물조차 보이지 않고 묵묵히 뿌리박고 서 있는
그 나무 때문이다
