A Thousand Tears

By Poet, Soonja Kwon
Translated by Anne Nordquist

The speckled moonlight
Licks at my grief-torn heart
Beloved sweet girl
Let me wipe your wounds and tears

Unyielding spirit that will not grovel
It hurts
Need to hang on with all my strength
Can’t let my spirit be devoured, I must live
I must live so I can bear witness

Caught like a criminal I cannot escape
I mutter in the moonlight

Night, and my heart bleeds
The touch of my tears lingers
Amidst the pain a sharp scent arises

O, the course of my life that has gone astray
Has drenched the moon and the wind
Every eye in heaven and earth is wet
Melting and melting the iron-willed hearts
Every heart breaks open

So that my broken body can stand up
So that my ragged heart can have strength
So that my life can be warmly embraced
Let me flow and swirl

Let these thousand tears
Soothe the fear that makes my flesh tremble

.
